Tri-Level Brownies

Ingredients

Bottom Layer:

Middle Layer:

Fudge Frosting:

Preparation

  1. For bottom layer, stir together first 4 ingredients and 1/4 teaspoon salt

  2. Stir in 6 tablespoons melted butter

  3. Pat in 11x7½x1½-inch baking pan

  4. Bake at 350°F for 10 minutes

  5. For middle layer:

    • Combine granulated sugar, 1/4 cup butter, and chocolate
    • Add egg and beat well
    • Stir together 2/3 cup flour, baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • Add to chocolate mixture alternately with a mixture of the milk and vanilla
    • Fold in nuts
    • Spread batter over baked layer
  6. Continue baking at 350°F for 25 minutes

  7. Cool

  8. Frost with Fudge Frosting

  9. Cut into bars

  10. Top with walnut halves if desired

For Fudge Frosting:

  1. In small saucepan melt chocolate and butter over low heat, stirring constantly
  2. Remove from heat
  3. Stir in powdered sugar and vanilla
  4. Blend in hot water to make almost pourable consistency
